All New Live Class for Gen Z Engagement
Live Class is an online learning feature where students from different areas can interact with teachers. Right now, only 40% of Skolla’s 15,247 premium users join Live Class sessions. The low participation is mostly because students in grades other than XII, IX, and VI are less engaged. To increase participation across all grades, Live Class needs to be improved to better fit the needs of Gen Z users.
Generation Z (Gen Z) refers to people born roughly between 1997 and 2012. Based on studies, Skolla users, mostly Gen Z, have these learning traits:
Preference for Short and Engaging Content
Gen Z favors brief, engaging content such as videos, infographics, and simulations that capture their attention and keep them interested.Desire for Experiential and Personalized Learning
They prefer learning through direct experiences and personalized materials that align with their interests, making the learning process more relevant and motivating.Strong Preference for Interactive and Technology-Based Learning
Gen Z enjoys online platforms that offer interactive and technology-based learning experiences, which helps them absorb material more effectively.
Gathered Insight
To determine whether users were interested in and liked the feature, we conducted a validation research study that included the following methods.
Competitor Analysist
We reviewed top education platforms and live streaming services to identify opportunities for our platform.
A/B Testing
We conducted A/B testing with students comparing our concept, including both design and content in live classes.
User Feedback
We gathered feedback directly from students through interview sessions
Research Finding
From the research, we found several key points:
Student Prefer Portrait Live Class With Short Video
Students like portrait live classes better because it feels more natural, like what they see on social media. Shorter videos help them stay focused and interested. How Live Chat Disruptions Affect Interaction
They find it hard to see live chat because it takes up the whole screen. This makes it difficult to interact with the teacher and disrupts their learning.Students Are More Engaged When Friends Are Present
Students are more likely to join and enjoy live classes if their friends are also there. This means we should add a feature that lets students see if their friends are in the same class.Need Live Quiz Adjustments
We must fix some parts of the class interface, especially the quiz section. The quizzes often cover the video, making it hard to see. Fixing this will make the class experience better.
Live Class Portrait
I divided the button space into top and bottom sections based on students habits during live classes. Since students more frequently use the chat feature, I placed the chat button at the bottom for easier access.
Floating Live Chat
To make the live quiz more interactive and like regular live videos, we added a floating chat feature. This lets students see the chat without having to open it.
I placed the chat button on the right side to help students respond quickly when the teacher asks questions. This adjustment encourages more active participation and keeps students engaged during the live session.
See Participant
Students can see who is in the class, which helps them find their friends and encourages them to join.
Adjust Live Quiz Portrait
The quiz button will appear when the teacher starts the quiz. Students will see the answer choices on their screen. If they want to view the question that the teacher is presenting, they can close the answer choices.
Landscape Version
We also revamped the landscape version to match the portrait experience, ensuring consistency across both orientation.
The Impact
Live Class released at the end of July 2024. The new format has significantly improved student motivation, understanding, and participation, creating a more interactive and effective virtual classroom experience.
I learned the crucial role of effective team communication for successful outcomes…
In working on the Skolla Live Class project, I found that clear and open communication was key to effective collaboration. By consistently sharing my design concepts, actively seeking feedback from the team, and addressing any concerns, I was able to ensure alignment and foster a cohesive environment. This approach not only helped in refining the design but also in achieving a successful project outcome.
